Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: The Prodigal Son

Kim’s gear sent out the coded signal which opened the hatch. It was a modest aperture, large enough to admit his gear, but just barely. Inside the Creighton auxiliary station he exited his armoured shell and made his way to the inner door; it hissed like an unfriendly pet as the pressure equalized and his ears popped. Kim was a hardened soldier, a member of the South’s most elite forces even before he was enhanced. Nature and experience had made him master of his fear, Dr. Bearden’s unnatural experiments had made him fearless, and yet he felt trepidation entering his creator’s lair.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Getting to Pioneer

It was a harrowing escape. They decided to torch the van because DNA bombs are expensive and stolen vans are cheap. There weren’t too many quips during the ride. Back at the safe house, crammed with equipment and  bodies, they sorted gear, cleaned clothing, showered and patched up the wounded.

“The Wayn building is a small city” Mads started excitedly.

Lukas steeled himself for what was sure to be an overly exuberant briefing on the target structure, but Mads had managed to get his hands on the blueprints and had the best knowledge of local security countermeasures.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Amor Vincit

21 Spring 1928 – Jan Mayen

Light streamed through their hotel window as it overlooked the square. Lyta caught glimpses of the early-morning Perfect Form practitioners as they started their routine. The bed was soft beneath her, the first real bed she’d slept in for half a season, but it didn’t stop her stomach or her arms from aching. She closed her eyes and traced the pattern of the bedspread with her fingertips.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Friends and Family

"Your friend? You don't have any friends!"

The words rang and echoed in his head, eliciting a mental wince each time.

It had been a hurtful thing to say to Todd, not because it was true--it wasn't; weird as they were, Todd had developed and maintained numerous friendships across the Badlands.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: The Conversation That Wasn't

32 Spring 1928
20:00

Lyta snuck glances at her brother as she drove. Todd was in the back, engrossed in one of his books. Lukas had the passenger seat and was watching the windshield intently. No one spoke. No one had spoken for hours.

Khayr ad-Din

The crime and poverty of living on the planet’s greatest rubbish pile only added insult to injury for the colonial-era settlement of Monroe. For centuries, that city thrived in the Badlands until, one day, a storm of white corrosive sand eroded it into near non-existence.

Centuries passed where the poor inhabitants of what became know as Khayr ad-Din, built on the vestiges of Monroe,  eked out meager existences recycling and reclaiming what they could form the global trash trade. These “Trashers” formed the economy.

Prince Gable

The Westridge Range forms a north-south barrier between the Barrington basin and Western plain to one side and the Great White desert, Cajun plains and Marathon basin to the other. Slithering up its eastern side for a thousand kilometers is the Westridge Trench. It is reputed to be one of the most spectacular physical features of Terra Nova, and many tourists from the poles came to visit the topographical wonder.

New Baja

Old Port Baja was founded in TN 740. It was one of the three largest cities in the Badlands until the second wave of the War of the Alliance when it was destroyed in the now famous Battle of Baja.

Nearly half the population was killed or displaced by the war. Little remains of the once lauded “Jewel of the Badlands”. The survivors of the battle eked out a pitiful existence after the war, beset by rovers and easy prey for anyone to abuse.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: SNS On The Hour News Report for 32.SP.28

Reporting from our tower in prince Gable, this is SNS On The Hour news.

Good evening. Reports are emerging from a wave of refugees recently arrived in Jan Mayen of an alleged slave camp in the E.S.E. Eyewitnesses report illegally indentured commoners were rescued by an unspecified force. This comes only a few weeks after the brazen kidnaping and murder of a MILICIA officer in Bangweuleu. If the reports are true, it may be an indication that the AST is attempting to tighten security in a region known for ever increasing instability and lawlessness. Some analyst believe we could see a repeat of the open revolt such as the one seen in Basal in 1920...

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: An Apology

Lukas found the wreckage of three Jagers about 50 meters from the camp. They were sand-blasted clean and the dry desert air around New Baja kept them rust free. He knew they must have been stripped of anything of worth long ago, but their outward appearance in the pre-dawn light was still remarkably intact and threatening. Somewhere in the distance helios was pulling itself over the horizon to announce a new day.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Changing Winds

They were camped somewhere south of New Baja, their tents camouflaged in the half-buried wreckage of a forgotten skirmish from the war. The wind was up and whipping at the shelters as a modest storm approached. Lukas and Todd were sharing one tent, Fennec was watching the Ranger in another and Ti and Lyta had settled into theirs.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: The Thoughts that Bind

25 Spring 1928

Lyta sat on the bed of the hotel room, her knees tucked up to her chest, her hands wrapped around her thighs. She stared off at nothing, her mouth clenched in a tight line.

Lukas, Fennec, and Todd had all gone off to their various observation points, and Miranda Winters had left almost as soon as she had arrived to attend to Paxton business. Ti watched his girlfriend from the window, his expression concerned. “Lyta,” he began tentatively.

“You should have told me,” Lyta snapped without looking at him.

Koreshi Chronicles – Chapter IX: Waking Up

Lyta nuzzled into Ti’s shoulder as the first rays of Helios peeked through the window. She didn’t know where she was, wouldn’t have been able to find the tiny homestead on a map, but it didn’t matter. It was safe and comfortable and quiet, and that was all she wanted.

“I wish we could stay like this forever,” she murmured.

“Mmm,” came Ti’s sleepy reply.

“No one shooting at us, no mission, just… this. All the time.”

“The idea does have a certain charm,” Ti agreed.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: We Need To Talk

“We need to talk.”

Fennec announced it without preamble as she entered the hotel room. Ti was looking out the window, deep in thought. He waived the mechanic to the couch and sat down. Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Drunk Tank Red

1 Spring 1928

Preceptor Mia Robinson sat at the head of the conference room table of Raleigh’s central precinct. Around the room, staff members examined their data-pads and terminals. The image on the conference room wall shifted from a woman in her late 20s to a man of approximately 50 cycles. He wore the dark blue scrubs of an inmate, with close-cropped black hair and slender fingers. The live feed showed him staring intently at the inner courtyard fronting his cell as citizens and protectors walked past, none of them giving a second thought to the one-way glass that hid the deviants from public view.

Wordslingin'

Time for a change of perspective! While his siblings are off plotting to end the Bear’s human trafficking ring, Lukas has no time for such high-handed morals. Indeed, at the hands of his HIRA handlers and his Comptroller superiors, it looks like he will become a key player in the slave trade his siblings are attempting to stop. This week: a prison break and some tricky negotiations in the ESE…

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Unsavory Choices.

Lukas spent 45 minutes doubling back on himself and using every possible countermeasure to make sure he wasn’t followed before settling in on a place to have dinner. He held the parcel under his arm, aware that if a tracking device was embedded in it, his best spycraft would serve no purpose. That was the reason he wasn’t returning to his safe house. That and he was hungry.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: Wound Up, Wound Down

39 Winter 1928

It was a cruel joke of the universe, Lyta reflected, that placed her hotel room directly across from the square where Jan Sebastopol led his Perfect Form sessions. Three times a day, a crowd of hundreds assembled to perform the fluid motions that were part martial art, part dance, part meditation. They eclipsed everything else in her view of the city, a battalion of GRELs moving in time under the orders of their commander. Lyta had taken to keeping the blinds closed.

The lock chimed and Lyta’s hand was immediately on her gun. She brought it to bear as the door opened.

Ti Corovan stepped inside, saw the barrel aimed at his chest, and raised his hands. His eyes widened. “Whoa, there. It’s me. It’s just me.”

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: A Life Worth Killing

36 Winter 1928

Lyta’s nerves were on fire as she reached the hotel room. Her jaw ached from tension, and her nails had dug crescent-shaped gashes into her palms. She had been out of sorts since arriving in Jan Mayen, since she’d first caught sight of GRELs in the streets, walking around like they were people. GRELs outside her door at night, GRELs acting as some farcical security squad that would just as soon take her out as protect her, GRELs in secret meetings as though they weren’t going to turn around and immediately deliver the information right back to the CEF.

But that was nothing compared to the bombshell Ti had dropped an hour ago: that Dr. Neseen was working on letting GRELs breed. He would give them the ability to have purple bastard babies who could continue in their parents’ footsteps forever. She had turned it over and over in her head, and there was only one solution. Only one thing that would fix the problem. She just had to work up the courage to do it.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter IX: The Eye of the Storm

“Are you sure you don't want to pull over?”

“Can’t. We’re still too close to the camp. They’ll be on us like a pack of dawgs as soon as the storm lifts.”

Ti looked out the windscreen at the howling sandstorm battering the behemoth and considered the thirty-plus hostiles still at the camp from which they were slowly escaping.

“I suppose you're right. We’d best keep moving. Just sit still while I check you out. And try not to get too excited.”

“So” Fennec asked as she grabbed a towel out of the hamper. It was already damp but with a shrug she went about drying her wet hair with it anyway.

Tom waited patiently in the antechamber of the consular building. A polite Humanist offered him a real coffee which he was delighted to accept. After only 15 minutes he was ushered into the ambassador’s office.

“Doctor Chambers,” the ambassador said welcomingly.

“Ambassador, it is a distinct pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.”

“How can the AST or the Humanist Alliance be of use to the Badlands Caravan Guild?”

Doc Chambers smiled. “I see my reputation precedes me.”

The caravan was at the crossroads. One trade route went came from the south along the Lonely Hills within the Humanist Alliance and went northward across the Karaq Wastes, through the Port Arthur defence zone to Massada. Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Dear Fennec

F.,

Initially, I wasn't going to write you at all.  I'm still not sure I shouldn't ask T1 to murderize you in your sleep.  (Or did I?  He'll never tell you in a way you can fully believe.)

But as L. pointed out, there would be some hypocrisy in being truly mad at you.  Not that I'm completely above that, but I try.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Dear Todd

T.,

I find myself quite unsure of what to write; on reflection, it appears this is the first time I've ever written you a letter.  I wonder what it is like for your penpals.

I've just made a deal that'll keep the mind-controllers off your back forever, provided you don't go down there or mess with them anywhere else.  I've also made sure that you'll have enough money to buy a lifetime's worth of books--even at the speed you read.  I've attached the info in a specially encoded manner in a series of Classified ads that will run in the daily newspaper in Temple Heights on your birthday.  I'll leave you that to figure out.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Dear Lyta

L.,

By now you will have rejoined T2 and, I expect, performed whatever time-sensitive operation your intel permitted.  I am confident that you will have prevailed.

You can relax regarding concerns about animosity emanating from our most recent team activities.  I have made arrangements such that neither you nor T1, not anyone you care about, remains at risk.  There were conditions, though only two of them should concern you and T1:  stay out of their territory, and do not take on any work against them.  I will deal with the rest.  Regardless of how that turns out, I have been assured that you will be safe from retribution of any kind.  Please inform F. of same.

Koreshi Chronicles – Chapter VIII: Birthday Wishes

25 Autumn, 1927

The moon was bright overhead as they walked across the desert sands. Lyta could barely hear the sounds of the Askar camp anymore, the boastful talk on the eve of combat. It was good to be back among Koreshi, and even better to have Jonas with her again. She wondered if Ti knew how special he was for the Sand Riders to have accepted him at their fire, to have shared their food with him.

They had laughed easily while they sat side by side amongst the Koreshi warriors, Lyta translating when the conversation slipped into the secret language that Ti had not been taught. But as they walked further from the camp, the banter faded. Despite their enthusiastic reunion earlier in the afternoon, Lyta found herself falling into old patterns of awkward silence. She glanced over at the man she had thought was dead, that she had begged God and the Prophet to bring back to her, to give her one more chance to tell him how she felt, and she said nothing.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Of Family Ties and Strange Territories

25 Autumn, 1927

Esmé shook her head free of the towel and peered into the tiny mirror of the cabin bathroom. She tilted her head one way, then the other, taking stock of her new hair. Short... dark... and yet somehow still a mess. She chewed on the corner of her lip, and huffed. Clearly she'd have to find a barber once they hit Port Arthur. The smell of the hair dye burned her nostrils, but after cleaning up for so many jobs in the HA, at least her skin didn't sting after showering anymore.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Choices of the Heart

25 Autumn, 1927

The first rays of dawn poked over the horizon as the Gamma Maglev hurtled northwest. Lyta sat on her pull-out bed, her knees drawn up towards her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around them. She had finally given up on sleep. What little shut-eye she’d managed had been fitful and full of nightmares. It was only natural, she supposed.

Fennec and Todd were still sleeping. She could hear Fennec’s deep and even breathing on the bunk above her, and Todd lay quiet on the top bunk of the opposite side of the cabin. Lukas’ and Radsley’s bunks were conspicuously empty.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VIII: That Sinking Feeling

Okran Radsley plugged into the terminal reluctantly, a sinking feeling settling in. His computer immediately set up a local dampening field that played havoc on any device more sophisticated than a bottle opener. It only took a few seconds for the secure link to Nightingale to connect. He was prepared for the worst. In 18 cycles of operations he had never had one go so badly.

It wasn’t the death toll in and of itself -- that was always a black stain on any covert op in the Alliance -- it was where it had happened and with whom and when. A public battle with fatalities in a secure transportation terminal with Republican forces during a week of diplomatic discussion at the heart of the HARPF command center. It was truly and epicly disastrous.

Supplemental Combat Rules

HIT LOCATION AND DAMAGE

Called Shots - Ranged and Close Combat

Attacks are generally aimed with the intention of striking an opponent--somewhere.  Wounding hits employ the standard, somewhat abstracted, damage system.

A character can aim at a specific small target or body part (e.g. chest, arm or leg, abdomen), thus incurring the following penalties:.

-1 die for a torso-sized target
-2 dice for a limb-sized target
-3 dice for a head-sized target (hands, feet, neck, groin)
-4 dice for finger-sized target (eyes, ears)

Against an armoured target, a character can attempt to hit a vulnerable spot or "chink in the armour":

-3 dice for armour piercing shot: halves armour
