Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Fighting for Fun and Profit
33 Autumn 1928
“Keep my number for when the time comes. I may know some people who can help you.” A handshake and a knowing glance as contact information was exchanged. Karrell would be a useful ally. Anyone fighting on the same side as they were was a welcome change of pace; sometimes it seemed like the entire world was lined up on the other side of the board.
They broke contact just as two newcomers approached the still. Lyta could tell at a glance that these were no Wolves. They had the look of Oscar’s half of the guest list: avant-garde beards and fashionable clothes that would fall to pieces in seconds when exposed to the harsh environment of the desert.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Standing on the Threshold
I’m standing on the threshold. It isn’t the first time.
How long has it been, a few hours? I need to return to my duties. But where does my duty lie? The message said if I left I’d lose my chance to understand.
I’ve been here before, but I can’t think about that. It hurts. My head hurts, more than my head hurts. Nein! Concentrate. Choose!
I step back from the threshold. I’m not a prisoner; I can leave. I’m no one’s prisoner. I’m a soldier and this is my war.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Leave Me Alone
Ennik had a table along the wall, where he was animatedly simulating a neck-and-neck Gear race with a soda bottle and a coffee mug. Mads was looking on enthusiastically as the mug pulled ahead.
They both glanced up as Fennec led the team into the bar. Lukas was leaning heavily on Lyta, while Todd and Fennec were clearly exhausted. There was a woman with them, and she seemed on the verge of catatonia. Everyone looked, peculiarly, like they'd been through the wash.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Minding the Work
“What date is it?”
“32 Autumn.”
“Why is it I can never remember the date when I am signing a document?” Doc Chambers asked distractedly. The conference room table of the Prince Gable offices of the BCG was covered in papers. Outside, leaves of another kind fell from the reddening gardenia birches.
Ellen Cranby ignored the rhetorical question. She had developed a knack for ignoring most everything the businessman said that wasn’t professional or deeply offensive. It was the only way to keep up with the amount of work that the BCG and the Doc’s other ambitions generated.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: At the End of the Tunnel
28 Autumn 1928
Lyta stared out the window as Port Arthur shrank behind them. Her gaze held steady on the vanishing city, as though to convince herself that they had really left. Absently, her right hand traced the stitches of her seat’s upholstery, and she rolled her feet in time with the vibrations of the wheels. She had not slept, not really, since returning from the cave. Nightmares had forced her back to wakefulness and she had decided that being tired was preferable to being terrified.
She twitched every time someone passed her seat, on the way to the bathrooms or the meal car. She kept imagining the Zelanis logo out of the corner of her eye. The sunlight on the windows looked like cascading water, threatening to drown her.

“I don’t get it -- they’re criminals!” Major Beria said in exasperation, throwing his arm in the air. Colonel Arthur let out a sigh, straining to remain patient and hoping his subordinate wouldn’t launch into another tirade. Major Diego, the CO’s chief of staff, stepped in once again to mediate.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: A Brief Respite
As Helios finished its long arc across the dusty horizon of the Badlands and the rays receded, the warmth of that autumn day was replaced by stretching shadows and a chilling breeze. It would be an overcast night, and by morning there would be a few centimeters of fresh sand to broom off the wrap-around porch that hugged the remote homestead like a comforting blanket.
Minnie watched the bubbling saucepan absent-mindedly. A moment too late she took the boiling milk off the heat and poured it into the waiting mugs, adding a lighter note to the dark drinks. She gave the spiced tea a sniff to make sure she hadn’t ruined them with her inattention but found no indication she had burned the whitener. She added a dash of nutmeg and a cinnamon stick to finish the cocktail and placed the mugs on a waiting tray.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Why We Fight - Part 1
Fennec sauntered into the lab which she had become overly familiar with the day before in a way that which only combat can sear into one’s mind. Ti had told her she was to meet with Isabella Damosa. She knew this was part of his objective to bring her deeper into the fold, but beyond the vague sense of his goal, she didn’t know what to expect. Was this going to be an intelligence briefing? Should she take notes? Was she going to have to learn dead drops or secret passwords? She had no clue.
She found the Isabella working on cleaning up some of the damage that had occurred and waved at her. The GREL looked at her dispassionately and nodded. She then pointed her guest to a bench and sat down herself. Fennec waited for the GREL set the tone of the exchange.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: The Big Picture
It was a roadside homestead frequented by caravans but also a destination for locals and not-so-locals who came from hundreds of klicks around for the ‘best barnabe back ribs in the Badlands’.
The summer sun was setting. Nicosa Renault sat at the back of the veranda and watched it wane. The crowd was starting to pick up, no doubt for the band setting up on the stage at the far end of the parking area. Smoke billowed up from the barbecue pit and a friendly waiter topped off her lemonade as he cleared her dish of discarded bones.
A tall Badlander strode up in a long duster, his features shadowed by the setting sun at his back.
“Mission accomplished?” Nicosa asked as she used a cloth to wipe her hands.
“Scratch one more bad guy,” came Kain’s reply.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Ripples of Regret
Ti found her in the bathroom, a stiff-bristled brush in her right hand, leaning over a basin of cloudy water. Her fingers were already scrubbed pink, as was her face. The only trace of blood that remained from their encounter at the lab was under her fingernails, and she attacked them with the intensity of a battlefield commander.
Ti leaned against the doorframe and watched her. She had been tight-lipped since they’d returned to the hotel and changed out of their blood-stained clothes. She had returned his kisses with only the most perfunctory of pecks. He worried about her.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Lighting the Way
Lyta found Jonas sitting in an easy chair, watching the street-life of Lyonesse as it passed below his window. A blanket was tucked around his lap, an empty mug beside him on a night table. The medical equipment was gone -- taken away by Doc Chambers when he had returned to points further south -- and there was no sign that the hotel room had been used for anything other than sleeping and resting.
Lyta knocked softly as she entered. “Thralan?”
Jonas looked up and smiled. He seemed tired. Lyta wondered whether he had gotten any sleep inside the Doc’s portable MRI machine. “Hippartha.” He gestured towards a chair opposite him.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: What Hangs in the Balance
Lyta and Ti lingered before the locked door of the conference room. Lyta’s hand was on the doorknob, but just for a moment, she couldn’t bring herself to turn it, to leave and re-enter the company of the others. Ti stood behind her, his right hand on the small of her back, his left hand on her shoulder, apparently having the same thoughts. He leaned in and kissed her neck, trailed his lips upward and bit lightly on her ear. “More later,” he murmured.
Lyta nuzzled against him. “Promise?”
“Promise.”
He straightened up and Lyta exhaled slowly, squaring her shoulders and putting on her game face. She turned the handle and Ti dropped the arm on her shoulder as they walked out. Lyta squeezed his wrist, just for a moment, as he walked into the next room where her brothers and Fennec were waiting. Lyta, for her part, caught sight of light glinting off glass from the kitchenette, and glanced over in that direction.
Doc Chambers stood behind the counter and poured two neat measures into waiting tumblers. He caught Lyta’s eye and slid one across the counter towards her.
Lyta spared half a glance towards Ti, already honing in on his next conversation target, and turned away from the living room. She walked into the kitchen, her gaze on the Doc.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Something I Can Never Have
It was truly fascinating to watch Titan Corovan work.
Lukas was, to put it mildly, an accomplished liar. He was quick on his feet and had an instinctual ability to say the right thing to placate a mark or adversary, to creatively edit the facts in order to achieve a fairly immediate end.

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: Seeds of Change
30 Summer 1928
The Saracen Memorial Hospital had a beautiful garden, full of trees and flowers both native and imported. It was remarkable what money could buy in the UMF, Lyta reflected as she trailed her fingertips over the ivy-covered railing beside the path. She had no idea what their hospital stay was costing, and frankly didn’t care. They had the money, and what was the point in having wealth if you couldn’t use it to make yourself comfortable while nursing a head wound? Or worse, she thought as she reviewed the conditions of some of Tatsugoro’s team.
She walked carefully. The pain had mostly stopped, but she still occasionally found herself dizzy or lightheaded, and the last thing she wanted was for a fall to summon the nurses. Out here, in the calm afternoon amongst the rustling trees, she could almost pretend she was alone. That she was somewhere else.
She found Jonas sitting on a bench, watching a bee as it flitted from flower to flower. She stood a little distance away, waiting, making sure she wasn’t interrupting, before she took a few steps closer. “May I join you, Thralan?”

Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter X: The Begining of the End
“They’re coming. Are you going to stick around?”
“Long enough to examine your Sand Ryder friend, then I must be off.”
Ti stood up from his terminal where he had just sent an encrypted message in response to Fennec’s brief report. He walked around the lacquered wood desk and sat on a firmly stuffed chair with silk upholstery opposite Doctor Tom Chambers. Tom offered him a glass of brown liquid poured from an exquisitely cut decanter.

Thirty minutes into flight the cacophony of the storm had abated. “We’re through the worst of it,” Diego called back from the cockpit as the turbulence and wind gave way to the more familiar and reassuring sound of the hopper’s twin thrusters. “I’m going to set her down to check that the fuel lines aren’t too iced over before we continue on to Djakarta Point.”
