The interviews began early in the morning, after juice and cookies were provided by the mayor and the general store. A line had formed outside the marshal's office, and a rather mixed and motley bunch had already been waiting when it was time for the interviews to begin. The call had gone out about a week before, and finally this was it. The door opened, and Sam smiled, "Alright, who's first?"
The interview process dragged on for a few hours....
"Name, age and occupation?"
"Katalina Steinman, I'm 35 cycles from Peace River. I was in the Peace River Army engineering detachment."
"Experience?"
"Battle of Baja. I was a combat engineer."
"Right," Kain nodded, "next!"
...
"Name?"
"Thornton Will, 60 cycles, Western Frontier Protectorate Army."
"Experience?"
"40 cycles as company sergeant in the 3rd WFPA Armoured Division."
"Right," Kain nodded, "next."
....
"Leah Dorchuk," the lovely young woman says, "36 cycles, from Baja."
"Experience?"
"MILICIA infantry. I enlisted before the CEF showed up. Helped liberate Baja Tower."
"Right," Kain nodded, "next."
....
"William Barton Pearce, 25 cycles. I'm from Lance Point."
"Experience?"
"Heavy weapons gunner for the Peace River Army, and resistance driver."
"Right," Kain nodded, "next."
...
"Name?"
"I am Koldur Jerasi!" the larger, square jawed man states like a challenge.
"Er..." Kain began.
"I've got this one, Kain." Sam smiled affably up at the big man, "You're a Sandrider, aren't you?"
"Yes, I am Koreshi, wandering this world until my tribe calls for me to return to the Great White Desert."
"I see," Sam continued, "and your reasons for being in this line today are...?"
"I was sent here by the Old Woman of the Desert."
"Right," Sam nodded, "next."

Apparently, Kane is big on nodding.
Although I think it's actually "Kain". I'll check my sheet....
I think it's more that Kain was trying to be cool and calm, listening to everyone's stories without betraying emotion. Also, I was setting up the punchline. :D
