Koreshi Chronicles – Chapter VII: Blossoming

28 Winter 1927

Dear Miss Julie,

I know we’ve only met a few times, and there’s no reason you’d be expecting a message from me. I guess I just wanted to write to say thank you. I think I’ve finally started to figure out that stuff you were talking about before the Meredine gala, about believing in yourself and knowing that you’re worthy of attention and stuff like that.

I guess you know that being the center of attention doesn’t come easy to me. That’s Quinn’s job. Usually I just sit to the side and do what needs to be done if it comes to that. But we had this op tonight, not really like our usual ops, and part of the plan was that I had to seduce the mark so that I could stall him and so that I could keep him safe without him realizing what I was doing.

I got all dolled up and everything. I had Fennec take a picture of me before I changed out of the dress and took off all the makeup. You’ll see it attached to this message. I know the makeup’s kinda thick, but it was also a bit of a disguise – you really can’t recognize me under all that stuff, which is how we wanted it. How do you think I look as a redhead? The stylist promised me it’ll wash out in a week or two, which is good because I’m not used to that much color on my head. I like the pixie cut, though. Maybe I’ll keep that.

By the way, if you get the chance could you show the picture to Ellen? I bet she’ll laugh her head off.

Anyway. You wouldn’t have really considered the mark all that challenging, I guess. Little Mekong programmer with his nose in his notebook. If he’d had any girl pay attention to him since… well, since ever… I’d probably buy you a drink. Unless he’d paid for a girl to pay attention to him, anyway. I think he thought I was an escort or something for most of the night. Wouldn’t have blamed him, based on the way I looked. But I got his attention, and that’s the important thing.

I won’t say it felt natural, because it didn’t. I’m still not really used to this sort of thing, being sexy and approaching guys with drinks and using all those ‘feminine wiles’ Ellen was talking about. But it went smooth. Smoother than I thought it would. I got him to think I was really interested in him, even with he started talking about the rice-paddy clog dance and I wanted to shoot myself from boredom. And I was able to stick with him for most of the night, until we were sure he was safe and didn’t even know he’d ever been in danger.

So I just wanted to say thank you for pointing me down the right path. I don’t think I could have done it without your pep talk last Summer. I know you’ve probably got more important things to do than read my ramblings, so I’ll keep this short and let you get back to them.

Maybe one day I’ll even be able to tell you all this stuff in person.

Say hi to Dr. Chambers for me.

Best wishes,
Kess

Lyta’s hand hovered over the buttons at the bottom of the screen. She nearly deleted the whole thing. There would be no chance to send it while they were in the Alliance, naturally, and she’d given away far too many details to share with someone so close to the Doc. Still…

She saved it to her datapad. Maybe when they got back to the Badlands, she’d rewrite the letter so that there was nothing specific and send it. Maybe one day she would get to thank Miss Julie in person. Until then, she put it out of her mind. Miss Julie would just have to remain blissfully ignorant a little while longer.
