Koreshi Chronicles - Chapter VII: People Are Like Beer?

“Okran,” she said brusquely as he sat on the small wooden chair. He laid his heavy arms on the table and it wobbled.

“Lorelei,” he responded laconically as he caught her beer glass before it tipped. He gave her a broad smile and a wink.

“Don't look so pleased with yourself,” she said with a sigh while she recovered her glass from his oversized hands. “First, it's unwarranted.” She paused for a sip, never taking her grey eyes off of him. “Second, it's unbecoming.”

“I can't help it if I'm pleased. The Vendar op went off pretty well I thought.”

Okran threw one of his great limbs into the air and caught the eye of the waitress in her black waistcoat and neat white apron circulating the old bar. He pointing to Lorelei’s drink and she nodded. When he looked back his companion was eyeing him incredulously.

“I've read your report. I think it wasn't a complete disaster.” She concluded generously.

“Vendar is of to Tatant, they stopped a Freewill plot which would have been unfortunate, and we now have a contact for smuggling into the Badlands. Not to mention breaking the ice with Morris.”

Okran’s beer arrived. It was a slightly hoppy clear lager and he quickly downed half of it in a single draft. Across the table Lorelei shook her head in disbelief.

“Your ice is merely cracked. You have no idea how thick it is and how far we are from the Comptroller!” She leaned in as she lay into him, but she settled back and regained her composure before she reached the edge of an emotional outburst. “But you raise a valid point. The new contact is a valuable asset. Not only for her introduction to Morris but her network in the Badlands. In fact, I don't see why you’re still using those other operatives.”

It was Okran’s turn to shake his head. “Lorelei, we can't trust her.”

“That's rich coming from you. What makes you think you can trust Quinn?”

“Listen, they're both good assets because they’re both transparent, which makes them predictable. The difference is that Benelice is loyal to her father.”

“And Quinn?” Lorelei asked, truly interested in understanding Okran’s way of thinking. After all, that was why she had put him in charge of this op.

Okran picked up his glass of beer and looked at it theatrically. It was a warm-fermented micro-brew, straw yellow with light carbonation. “His motivation is as clear as Benelice's.” He then downed the second half of his beer in a gulp. “It just so happens that his, we can use.”
