Playing for Keeps 3

Peace River was boiling over. There were riots on all four terraces, and at least half of the Prospects were no-go zones for POC and PRDF units. The city was on the edge of catastrophe, and it was all her doing.

Sundra Gabriel smiled in grim satisfaction. She looked out over the city, its eerie glow casting flickering shadows along the inside of the storm wall. It had been how many cycles since her brother Thom died on the assembly lines in an accident? How many cycles since she watched her parents waste away and die, victims of Paxton's exploitation? Now it was all coming to fruition. The cycles of planning, the assassinations, the smuggling. By the time it was over, the monster known as Paxton Arms would be slain, and the workers of Terranova would be saved.

"Gabriel," the voice was laced with impatience, "are we ready?"

"Ormond," Sundra turned to the SRID agent, nodding. Behind her stood "Simba", the other SRID thug. "Yes, we're ready. When you've cracked the encryption, make your way to the rendezvous point as we planned, and from there, we'll get you to a safehouse."

"And me?" Simba grunted.

"You know your job. Do it. Harpster is too important." She nodded to them, "we both get what we want: Paxton Arms doesn't get into the Polar Heavy Gear market, and the Oxford treaty is nullified." She smiled.

Ormond's eyes narrowed. There is something very wrong here. She nodded and led Simba back inside.

Gabriel turned back to the balcony railing. More footsteps kept her from revisiting the past.

"Everything's in place," one of her lieutenants reported, quietly.

"Good. And the leak?"

"It's been dealt with. I don't know who sent her, but she won't be making any more reports."

"Step up the timetable. Get to 357 the moment you get my signal."

"What? But--"

"Do it."

"It's a hell of a way to die."

"It doesn't matter," Sundra looked out onto her city, "we're going to end this, once and for all."
